Ahwaz Projects

AhwazDaghaghale is a village close to Ahwaz (about 5km) on a road by name of "Jadeh Tasfieh Shekar" (Tasfieh Road) with a population of about 10,000 people. The local government is compromised of 3 members (Shora-y-Rosta) where one of the members is a woman and the other two are men.

There are no areas for farming since Deghagheleh is over the oil fields covered with oil-wells and pipelines. Most of the men work in factories in Ahwaz for minimum wages, and most of the women are at home with more than 6 children.

Daghaghale is considered the suburbs (Kharej az mahdoudeh) so the City of Ahvaz (Shahrdari Ahwaz) does not help them. At the same time, since they are close to the main city, the Agricultural Ministry does support them. In addition, they are in the Karoon River's side; their main problem is having drinking water. We are working towards getting them clean water by trying contacting UNISEF to provide them with clean water. This is the RIGHT of every child.

The predominant language of these people is Arabic. As much as the children enjoy going to school, they have hard time learning in the first grade due to their language barrier.

There is a separate girl's and boy's grade school and there is no high school. In order to go to high school, the boys go to Ahwaz and the girls stay at home. Most of the women are illiterate.

We at ICRS have asked our project manager to help the women and young children by opening a daycare center (or as they call it a "Kinder Garden"). Our experience in South Khorasan has proved to us that the children who have been in nursery school are much more ready for the first grade.
